17 Aug 2008Yesterday, I went to Invent Singapore conference that organized at Pan Pacific Hotel. The conference includes 4 workshops but because of the time sake, you can only attend 2 out of 4 from them. As a result, I choose “Design in Innovation” and “An Inventor’s Journey” these 2 workshops.
The event start with a conference with few honorable speakers’ talk and a forum with speakers.

There was an exhibition hall at the upper floor of the conference room as well.

This is PlugKing that you can easily extend your power extension to unlimited (maybe?).

We also got some robotic toys which is apparently expensive to own one (at least not me)

This one is awesome to me. In my imagination, the kidney machine is always big and heavy. Now, we have a portable and wearable version which is merely 1KG.

There still a lot of invention in the exhibition hall which I did not cover it here. The event ended at 5PM. It was a tired but meaningful day. I get to know and learned from the experience that shared by others.
Today was a sudden trip to Suntec City. Gilliam buzzed my messenger this morning and asked me whether interested to go to Sunctec because there is a comic exhibition. Guess you guys know my reply and I am here.
First impression, the exhibition hall is damn small and crowded. Right in the entrance, I saw the Storm Troopers are playing Wii. Honestly, I wish I can see some pretties play Wii Sport instead of these jerks.

Luckily, after a few steps, I find girls at the other Wii booth.

Here we got the modern matched version of beauty and the beast. She is cute, isn’t she? :p

I always found that it is interesting to watch people drawing. I used to draw but it was a decade ago, and I gave up my dream.

Realistic and cool looking Ironman. Pre-order one if you wish to.

Since this is a comic convention, we sure will see some cosplay. Here I got D.Grayman Leenalee and Allen Walker. Sorry Allen! I only focus on Leenalee.

Overall, nothing much to see. Maybe I am comparing it with Japan. LOL. But this may be a good start and I wish to see more of this kind event in future.
It had been quite few months I haven’t update my blog. I quit my previous job in Malaysia and now I am in Singapore.
I joined a local Singapore company, G Element and participate in the NAVTEQ LBS Challenge.
Today, I went to CommunicAsia 2008 at Singapore Expo to attend the NAVTEQ LBS Challenge Award Ceremony. My company participated and submitted a mobile solution, Earth@SG Mobile, in this challenge. I was lucky to get involved in the development just after I joined the company. Our solution is provide mobile user the local search proximity. User can query any points of interest (POIs) that near to their location using GPS.

We are manage to be one of the finalist in APAC region. But sadly we didn’t win any prices at the end. Joiku Soft walked away with the grand price of $275,000 USD. They provide an interesting software client called JoikuSpot which will turn your mobile into wireless hotspot.

Anyway, we still get us a “trophy” and it is a interesting experience to me.

After the ceremony, I walked around the exhibition halls. Yeah, it is a huge exhibition with several halls together. There are a lot of exhibitors take part in this event. We got Singtel, Sony, Samsung, LG, Yahoo!, NTT docomo and more. TM telcom and Green Packet from Malaysia also joined the crowd. You can expecting some latest mobile phones and gadgets in exhibition. More photos at below.

I manage to get a hand on experience for the Garmin’s nüvifone as well. It is a fully touch handset with GPS functionality build-in which is the expertise of Garmin since they are one of leading GPS navigator manufacturer.

I am quite impressed with this device actually. Nice and neat interface it got. Kinda similar to iPhone where you can scroll the menu with your finger. I upload a demostration of the handset.
Lastly, I make my way to the another booth of my company. We have another project, Germanium. It provides a plugin which enable real time 3D in building rendering in the web browser.

Too bad, I was not able to run through every single corner of this exhibition with the limited time I had. And very sorry folks, sorry for the disappointment that no hot chicks’ photos have been taken. Or should I say I forgot due to the reason I was over excited by the gadgets? Again, this is an exciting exhibition to attend if you interested in communication technology, mobile gadgets, and pretties.

19 Apr 2008Far well to our “beloved” floppy that served us for megabytes decades. But we really have to go my “dear”, we are going to new gigabytes era. So long my “dear”! We will miss “you”?
Apparently, I won”t! Wuhahaha!
With the introducing of USB flash drives in early 2000, our portable storage capacity increased thousands times than before. USB drive not only can used as a backup storage, but we can actually load some applications into this tiny little piece of hard drive.
What can we load into then? Maybe something that you want to use and often can’t find it on other people machine? Something that you don”t want to share because of privacy matter?
I had my personal internet browser and email client in my USB drive and carry them with me all the time. When I mean portable application, I mean I will leave no trace, log or even registry on the machine that I plug in.
I had all the tools I want inside my USB drive. But soon enough, I find I am repeating myself when every time I have to browse through folder by folder just to get any file or program of mine. So I started to look for more efficient way to accessing my files or programs, and I discovered the PortableApps and PStart.

Both of them offer a brilliant way to accessing your USB drive by providing something similar like Windows’s Start Menu. You can organize and list out the files and programs you want inside the menu. This will allows you get into the item you wish much faster.
Grab yourself one of them. Try it out and you will love it.

3 Mar 2008Surprisingly, I still found a lot of my friends have no idea what is a GPS about.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is the only fully functional Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Utilizing a constellation of at least 24 Medium Earth Orbit satellites that transmit precise microwave signals, the system enables a GPS receiver to determine its location, speed, direction, and time.
Nah… I think most of us do know this “definition” from Wikipedia. In short, it is a navigation system that allows you to track and find out where you are.
Most of my friends, they thought GPS is a paid service. No, it is free. In general, if you only need to pinpoint where is your currently location, then it is absolutely free. For extra information such as traffic, tourist attraction, voice nagivation and so on, you might need to subscribe with certain amount fees from service provider, provided there is one.
To use, you only need a GPS receiver and a mapping device (e.g. laptop or PDA). Last year, I bought myself a Holux brand GPS receiver, GPSlim 236. I pair my laptop or PDA with the receiver through Bluetooth.

Install the map software (e.g. MapKing), off course, some of the software needed to be paid like the Microsoft Windows or Office you using. Then load the map of city or country that you desired and you are ready to go.

16 Jan 2008Most of the time, we get our job done through keyboard shortcut keys. Perhaps the most notables are Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. Who ever invent “copy and paste” was a genius(to me).
But do you know that our little mouse also has its “shortcut keys” as well? I am not talking about the 3rd mouse button or extra buttons that come with your Lamborghini(Logitech) mouse here.
Mouse Gestures! Yes, it is a way that combine your mouse movement with click to perform some common actions or functions on your program. Take a look on the video below and find out how a mouse gesture can do.
I started my very first experience with mouse gesture when I was using a web browser called Maxthon (formerly known as MyIE2) a couple years ago, years before Firefox was released, when IE still “ruled” the web. It built-in mouse gestures which it claimed that “you will feel uneasy without it when you addicted …” some sort of marketing gimmick words.
When Firefox roll out, I miss the mouse gesture feature very much since it does not have one. My younger brother even insist to stick with Maxthon because of mouse gestures although Maxthon is based on the same rendering engine as IE. But later, mouse gesture plugin for Firefox cames out and I got my old “love” back. Welcome back my “honey”! Muack!
But fear not my fellow IE friends! You can do the exact thing on IE too with this plugin.
You can even do mouse gestures on your desktop if you want using StrokeIt. Awesome isn”t it?
